‘Ashes to Ashes – Dust to Dust”, was one of the only things that really made sense to me from religion as a child. In the middle when we are ourselves form, we fashion this material called clay, like a fractal pattern repeating itself, within itself. Clay, with its legacy of endless transformation, is the perfect substance of metaphor: its limitless possibilities, always willing the maturity and fruition of ideas. ‘
'Dust' is the first London solo show for internationally acclaimed ceramic artist Michael Rice. Associate Professor of Studio Art in the American University in Dubai, Rice’s London debut coincides with his work being exhibited in Korea as part of the Korean Ceramic Biennale 2019. The exhibition presents Michael’s work to London, celebrating his archetypal presence with an intuitive collection exploring form creating form.
Originally from Ireland, Michael relocated to Dubai in 2010. He is a member of the International Academy of Ceramics based in Geneva and as a writer has published articles in the UK based international magazine of Art and Craft ‘Ceramic Review’, and the Australian publication ‘Ceramics Art and Perception’.
Michael is the International Academy of Ceramics UNESCO representative for the UAE and exhibited his work as a finalist in the Taiwan Ceramic Biennale at the Yingge Ceramics Museum in Taipei, World Design Capital 2016 where his work is now part of the museum's permanent collection.
