About Iara Talledo Violani
Born in London in 1999, Iara moved to Brighton in 2021 to complete a BA in 3D Design and Craft where she specialised in wheel-thrown ceramics. She is now studying MA Ceramics & Glass at the Royal College of Art.
Her work is inspired by the modernist SESC Pompeia building in São Paulo where on one of her visits with her Brazilian family, she recalls hearing that the shapes of the windows had been “randomly smashed out by a sledgehammer.” This chaotic and unpredictable approach to create something unique was her driving force throughout the project, challenging her natural gravitation towards perfection and perfectionism.
After creating individual elements on the potter’s wheel, she rejects the customary gentleness with which people treat soft, newly thrown pieces and instead collides them to create colourful collages. Alongside special effects glazes that look hugely different after firing, this method creates one-off assemblages of shapes where she cannot predict how the clay will collapse and deform into each other upon contact.
By working in this way, she has avoided falling into the vicious cycle of seeking perfection - something unattainable - and relaxed into working more intuitively.
