About Bronwen Grieves

"I began to work with clay in 1986 when I moved form London to Nottingham. A friend enrolled me to do an evening class with her at a local college which I continued to attend for the next 20+ years."

"I loved clay immediately but it took me a long time to before I could make anything interesting and years to establish a style of my own. I have always been a hand builder, using mainly stoneware and I continue to be fascinated by building with clay, it has almost limitless possibilities if you have the time and patience to work with it."

"I am interested in structure in the natural and built environments. For example, I like the colours, roughness, texture and scale of stone sea cliffs and pavements but I am also drawn to the precision of the built environment. The spaces it creates both within and without."

"When I began, I made asymmetric vessels but increasingly my work has become more abstract, larger in scale, with a focus on texture. I use robust and gritty stoneware clays to provide the strength required to make objects which create and enclose space but retain a sense of fragility and movement."
