About the Artist
“Glazes have always enthralled me - the richness and depth of Tang tenmoku, the delicacy of Sung qingbai, the vibrancy of Sung Jun ware. When I began throwing, I wanted to replicate those glazes and to understand how they might combine with newly developed glazes. I also wanted to develop a brighter colour palette. Working with an oxidising kiln and making high fired stoneware, one of my challenges has been to create glazes and glaze combinations that achieve a vibrancy of colour as well as depth and complexity of variation. My pieces highlight the cross-over effects of glaze layering and encourage the user to have a visual, as well as tactile, relationship with the forms.”
After many years of collecting and studying ceramics (as a therapeutic antidote to careers in academia and the law), Judith Hanson began working with clay seven years ago. After having been based in Chris Bramble's studio for five years, she established her own studio in St John's Wood in 2016.
Judith's primary influences are early Chinese functional ware and late twentieth century New Zealand studio pottery. She makes traditional, wheel-thrown stoneware forms and focuses on developing glazes, experimenting with how glazes interact in different combinations and with different application techniques. She makes individual pieces, best categorised as functional art.
