Stoneware, unglazed
H. 25 x dia. 30 cm

From the series 'Terra Brasilis' series:

“Terra Brasilis” is the ancient term used to describe Brazil before the arrival of the Europeans in the 16th century, when the natural environment was untouched and protected by the native people. It also represents the emotional journey through the geological landscapes of Brazil that dwell in my distant memories, revealed here from the fissures and crevices found in caverns to the outlines of the Tropical mountains I grew up admiring."

"It celebrates the detail and the vast, the remembrance and the environment. Roughness, cracks, irregularities and a true perception of the natural emerge from the unglazed clay body, imbuing this series with a sense of place and belonging."

About Claudia Barreira

Claudia’ Barreira's practice is defined as an evolving process that reshapes itself in response to materials, experimentation, and external influences. Rooted in research and investigation, her process is tactile and intimate, drawing inspiration from the shapes, textures, and transience found in the natural environment.

In ceramics, Claudia’s hand-built sculptures merge self-developed methods with ancient techniques, commonly incorporating wild soil and natural elements that she forages. Clay is continuously altered, torn, and shaped to form pieces that intentionally break away from the symmetry of the circular form. Through repetitive, meditative gestures, her hands become both tool and guide, engaging in a process that seeks balance between structure and spontaneity.

Claudia’s paintings are deeply informed by her background in art history and strong connection to abstract expressionism. Her compositions unfold through layered washes, textured surfaces, and bold, earthy pigments, many derived from the same wild clay she forages worldwide. Favouring a muted, natural palette, Claudia creates work that invites quiet reflection, allowing the raw, unrefined beauty of her materials to offer viewers a quiet sense of rest.

Claudia Barreira is a Brazilian artist based in London, UK, working primarily with ceramics and painting. With a background in Art History and Fine Arts, her practice explores the intricate connections between environment, material, and memory. Her work prioritizes character over perfection and expression over control, through a slow process that bears the marks of the hands that made them.

Claudia moved to London in 2022 after living in Canada for 10 years. She completed a First Class BA (Hons) in Contemporary Design Crafts at the University of Hertfordshire in 2023, followed by an MA in Ceramics and Glass at the Royal College of Art.
