About Angela Smith

The complex contradictions at the core of the human psyche are the central concerns of Angela Smith’s paintings. Smith disrupts the surface of her canvas, pouring and restricting paint over and over.  Paint floods, oozes, trickles and pools, allowing space for unpredictability and the unexpected, seeking a precarious balance between control and chance. This process-based work starts with no set outcome; building up materiality before harnessing it.

Angela paints with gloss and enamel, and texture in places is dense. Bulges and wrinkles create their own topography, echoing the many psychological layers we construct to conceal and protect our innermost selves. Elsewhere, the finish is a mirror-like veneer inviting space for introspective reflection.

In this abstract work Smith has intensified the application of paint, resulting in exaggerated bulges with taught distended outer skin containing unseen liquid beneath. These sculptural protrusions may look fragile but are strong, encasing their innards in a sold impermeable outer shell.

Cavernous and Turbulence have been created during the coronavirus pandemic, both works are in response to the huge uncertainty, anxiety and unease in the world.

Angela Smith graduated from the University of Brighton in 2008, with a degree in Fine Art Painting. She was the winner of the Cass Art Award at the National Open Art Exhibition, which led to her solo show Precarious in Islington in late 2018. Previous solo shows include Surface Tension at Lacey Contemporary Gallery London and The Unsaid at New Greenham Arts Newbury which was awarded as a prize shortly after she graduated. Her work has been selected for many group shows including the London Group Open, the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and the Discerning Eye where she was awarded the Parker Harris prize.
