About the Maker
In Puya Vakili's Celestial collection he uses a range of glazing techniques to explore his fascination with outer space. In this series, he employs both hand and spray-glazing to achieve rich tones and dramatic contrast. The outside of the vase displays a starry scene, while the midnight blue interior evokes a black hole, with the sharp edges of the vessel as its event horizon. Puya used similar methods to produce the companion plate, which is punctuated by the brilliant scarlet burst of a solar mass.
Puya is a London-based ceramist. He was born and raised in Southern California and attended university in the San Francisco Bay Area, where the proliferation of pottery studios made an early impact on his ideas about material and process. His work often couples simple forms with vibrant and tumultuous glaze work.
