About Leonardo Cappellini

"My work is born from an intimate, direct encounter with wood: a living, unpredictable material that already carries its own story. I do not shape wood to impose a form; I work to reveal what time, nature, and circumstance have already carved within it. Every knot, cavity, and imperfection becomes language, memory, and presence."

"I use only fallen trees, removed trees, or wood from necessary prunings. This approach is not merely a sustainable choice but an ethical commitment: giving new life to something otherwise destined to disappear. My pieces are not decorative objects; they are testimonies. They preserve the identity of the tree and invite a deeper relationship with the world around us."

"Turning is the moment when the dialogue between myself and the material becomes most intense—a constant balance between control and listening. The forms that emerge are archetypal, essential, almost ritual. Vessels, bowls, and sculptures become contemporary roots, bridges between nature and memory, fragility and permanence."

"Through my work, I seek to restore the wood’s original dignity—not as a material to be controlled but as a living being that continues to speak even after its life has ended."

Leonardo Cappellini is an artist and woodturner based in Florence. He creates unique vessels, sculptures, and one-of-a-kind objects entirely by hand, using only reclaimed wood from fallen, diseased, or necessarily removed trees. Born in Tuscany and deeply connected to his territory, he sources most of his material directly, recovering wood from the landscape or collaborating with local arborists.

His practice combines traditional woodturning techniques with a contemporary approach to form and material storytelling. His works are recognizable for their focus on grain, voids, and natural imperfections—treated as aesthetic and conceptual elements. Each piece arises from a dialogue with the wood, allowing the material itself to guide the process.

He has exhibited in events dedicated to fine craftsmanship and contemporary design, including Artigianato & Palazzo in Florence, where his work received an award. His pieces are held in private collections in Italy and abroad.

Through his artistic research, Leonardo explores the boundary between art, nature, and memory, giving wood a new life and transforming it into essential forms that narrate the passage of time.
