About Celia Pickering
Celia is a self-taught Birmingham artist, now living and working in West London. Her vibrant works on cotton paper are created using emulsion paint. Celia’s practice draws inspiration from retro floral textiles, vintage and mid-century aesthetics, as well as the world around her. Celia is also an independent art teacher, having ran her own children's art classes business for over 10 years.
 
Celia’s paintings delve into themes deeply rooted in her life and identity, evoking personal memories and experiences. From florals and birds to food, her vibrant and colourful works transport viewers to a realm of nostalgia. Celia’s fascination with botanical themes stems from her childhood experiences, her grandmother’s love for Laura Ashley textiles, her grandfather’s passion for the garden and birds, her mother’s passion for interior design, and William Morris.
 
During lockdown, Celia’s art journey began. With emulsion paint readily accessible, she discovered its domesticity and interior-ready palettes. She enjoys the large pre-mixed palette and the speed at which it dries. Celia paints on handmade rag cotton paper, which offers a wonderfully textured, woollen surface and rough edges. The journey of the handmade paper from India adds character and strength to her paintings.
 
Painting offers Celia’s meditative escape from the chaos of the world and her own moods. It provides her with a sense of control, reflected in the neat composition and control between colours and shapes. However, she also appreciates the contrast of the textured cotton paper and its ragged edges.
Celia hopes her paintings allow viewers to recognise their own memories and bring a sense of nostalgia back into their lives.
