About Isobel Higley
Isobel Higley creates ceramics that celebrate the meeting point of folk tradition and contemporary design. Working in stoneware and porcelain, she combines handbuilding and slipcasting techniques to produce distinctive, characterful forms inspired by her research into the traditional slipware of North Devon. A graduate of Falmouth University, Isobel has worked as a practising ceramic artist in the South West for nearly a decade. She continues to draw inspiration from the region’s rich customs and celebrations, including harvest festivals, May Fairs and wassailing.
Her work incorporates joyful, symbolic motifs that radiate warmth and positivity, often referencing natural forms and folkloric imagery. Each piece is decorated using traditional local processes such as hand-painted coloured slips, sgraffito and glazes made from natural materials. Her collections include both small domestic pieces and larger sculptural works, designed to bring a sense of character and storytelling into everyday life. Isobel’s practice reinterprets regional craft heritage for a contemporary audience, blending narrative, sustainability and joy in equal measure.
