Red local Terracotta from Mafra region, white engobe and blue glaze

H. 12 x dia. 10 cm

From the 'Metamorphoses' collection:

For her collection in Portugal, Karine presents a completely new body of work inspired by the traditional forms of Mafra pottery and particularly the iconic Moringue shapes and figurines.

Crafted from local terracotta clay, these pieces honour their origins while boldly reinterpreting them. The classic elements of the utilitarian Moringue vessels composed of spouts and handles, have been deconstructed and transformed into playful character like sculptures, each one a member of a newly imagined and diverse community born from tradition.

This collection reflects a deep dialogue between past and present, structure and spontaneity. Metamorphoses is not just a tribute to Portuguese ceramic heritage but a celebration of change, imagination and the joyful reinvention of cultural forms.

It also marks a personal metamorphosis. After more than two decades in the heart of Paris and London, Karine relocated to Ericeira, embracing a more sustainable pace, a deeper connection with nature for a new phase in life.

Metamorphoses is a celebration of change, of culture, of identity, of self, where tradition meets imagination and where clay becomes a language of belonging.

About Karine Hilaire

Karine Hilaire is originally from France, born in the rocky back country of the Ardèche, a region in the South East Rhone Valley.

A career in fashion led her to travel across Asia and South America and her ceramic work draws on the aesthetics of ethnic textiles, ancestral basketry and crafts.

She enjoys combining these influences to create bold freehand patterns and totemic forms seeking to find a space between functionality and sculpture, sensuality and playfulness. She explores ceramics as a tactile language where each unique piece becomes a vessel of memory, gesture and cultural resonance.

Karine co-founded a ceramics studio in Paris and later set up her own studio in London where she is represented by Thrown. Exhibitions include Collect, the leading international fair for contemporary craft and design.

She is now based in Ericeira near Lisbon where she organizes ceramic workshops and develops new collections inspired by the rich heritage of Portuguese ceramics.
