About Karl Sebastian
‘A homage to Nonna’s house’ is an imaginary and nostalgic series of works inspired by the aesthetics of my grandparents’ house and the memories made there. It was the catalyst for my passion to become an artist and to live with beautiful objects in a carefully curated home just as they did.’ 
 
‘Designed by Nonna and Nonno, the house was filled with mid-century furniture, ceramics, amongst the paintings, sculptures and silver jewellery made by my grandfather, Nonno.  It encouraged curiosity and was a playground for us as kids, full of tactile objects, toys and games.’ 
 
‘This work is a reflection of my own exploration of materials and practices. A coalescence of my inspiration, my craftsmanship and all that I owe to my family, capturing the essence of Nonnas house that only exists as a memory of those who knew of it.’ 
 
‘I consider myself as a maker and craftsman. I aim to reach a point of understanding through processes of making with materials from a systematic approach. The act of labour and simplicity of repetition is the core of my practice which evidences the work; a dialogue between myself and the items I make, between the workshop, the process and what I choose to display. I reveal the conversation I have with myself as a craft practitioner, a visual language of form and function, materiality and value, practice and patience, light and shadow.’
 
Karl Sebastian is a London-based maker. He studied Fine Art Sculpture at the University of Brighton, where he was taught to work in a multitude of materials. In 2023, he completed a MA in Ceramics & Glass at the Royal College of Art.
