About his collection for the exhibition 'The Leach Pottery: Heart Hand Mind':
'The potter Edmund de Waal recently met the author Tracey Chevalier for BBC Radio 4’s ‘Only Artists’. He describes a handmade pot as ‘It’s a breath, it’s a series of breaths. It’s a volume, it’s an interior space. Every single movement in the making of it is somatic, it’s a bodily thing’. He then adds, ‘It’s a bit of time, a bit of me’. (Him, or the person who made it.)
'The paintings from The Leach Pottery are an attempt to emphasise the relationship of touch and the material. The potters’ hands are sophisticated tools of feeling, measuring and forming. Thousands of hours of accumulated experience transform knowing into intuition.
'The charcoal portraits are a celebration of the individual potters who are the current Leach Pottery Studio team. I feel that it is important to acknowledge their contribution here and now, rather than retrospective historical information.'
