From the series 'End of Summer':
"I created a collection celebrating the ‘End of Summer’. An exploration of the fleeting beauty of late summer in Cornwall — a season suspended between warmth and change, when the days begin to soften and golden light settles across the landscape.
"Inspired by the August haze, long evenings and ever-changing light of the Cornish coast, the collection draws from the quiet moments I find in the landscape around me. Golden fields beneath a cool breeze, shadows falling across the ground, wildflowers in bloom, waves rolling towards the shore, salt on skin and the glow of the sun as it begins to disappear.
"Working primarily en plein air with acrylic paint, oil paint, oil sticks and oil pastels, I have allowed the changing conditions of the landscape to become part of the process. I’m drawn to the way light can transform a familiar place — how a field, dune or stretch of coastline can suddenly feel completely different as the sun moves, creating moments that are impossible to hold onto.
"Working directly within these surroundings allows me to respond intuitively to those changes, capturing something of the atmosphere and rawness of the environment rather than simply documenting what I see.
"Throughout the collection, a considered palette reflects the colours of August: warm, sun-washed tones balanced by cooler coastal hues. Through light, shadow, texture and colour, I hope to translate the sense of calm and presence I experience when immersed in nature.
"At its heart, ‘End of Summer’ is about holding onto a feeling. The small, often fleeting moments that become memories — a golden evening, a walk through the landscape, the rhythm of the waves, or the feeling of being completely present in a particular place and time.
"These paintings are a lasting imprint of summer; an attempt to preserve those feelings long after the season has passed."

About Coral Drummond
Coral Drummond is a contemporary artist based in Helston Cornwall ; exploring themes of nature and human connection through emotive , colour- explorative methods. Working majority in Oil Pastel and Paints , her work intuitively emotes raw gestures of feelings and expression, through repeated pattern work and compositions lead by colour theories. She Graduated from Falmouth University with a BA (Hons) Fine Art in July 2025. After graduating she worked from her community Sussex studio at 'Buckhurst Works', as a base for exploration, reflection and ongoing development. Now returning to Cornwall presently further defining her practice.
During her Studies , She exhibited 'Biophilia', a solo print-installation at Planted Café, Cornwall (November 2024) ; and contributed to Group exhibitions including 'Art on Edge', with The Holy Art Gallery, London (December 2024). 'BA Fine Art Degree Show' at Falmouth University (May 2025) and 'Free-Range Showcase' as part of Cornish art collective @3AND4ON20, with The Truman Brewery, London.
Since Graduating in July 2025, Drummond is involved in Open Studios from her time at Buckhurst Works Studios , East Sussex ( July 2025 -March 2026). Liberation Gallery, Brighton ‘ Art in Bloom’ ( April 2026) . 'The Winter Salon' at Candid Arts Trust, London (February 2026). Awarded 'Prisma Estudio AiR' in Lisbon , Portugal ( March 2026) .The recipient of the 'Eaton-Fund Grant Award' (February 2026). Artist Q&A - Sept 26
Where did you look for inspiration for this body of work - from past series or new ideas?
I spent a lot of time this summer at Gwithian, surfing and being out in nature, as well as at Helford Passage in Cornwall. I’m always quite heavily influenced by the scenery around me when I’m curating collections, especially colour combinations and what tone that creates. I really wanted to capture that feeling of the end of summer in Cornwall ; when the greens start to fade into gold and the sunsets are savoured through every shade of warm pink.
The painted leaf-shadow designs on the handmade wooden frames came from watching the sunlight coming through the branches. Patterns are a constant source of inspiration within my practice, from William Morris to Matisse influences , so it felt really natural to incorporate and bring that rhythm into this collection too.
I wanted the whole collection to feel quite organic, like a little moment in nature, and a reflection of that shift between summer and the changing season.
What’s made the biggest impact on your artistic practice?
Probably discovering oil pastels during my time on the BA Fine Art course at Falmouth University. Colour exploration is such a key part of my compositions, and when I first started experimenting with oil pastels, I found them really accessible for playing around with different colour combinations.
They reminded me of drawing as a child and, in a way, took away this idea of perfectionism and reintroduced me to play. I think I found a sense of my identity within my practice through using them.
I still love incorporating oil pastels into my paintings, even when they aren’t the main material. I feel like they bring an energy and an element of the uncontrolled into the work, which I really enjoy when creating.
What’s been the highlight in your practice so far?
The highlight of my artistic practice probably came from a month-long residency in Lisbon, Portugal. I immersed myself in the city, taking inspiration from its patterned and colourful tiles, depictions of nature, and the distinct character and soul of Lisbon itself.
Working from a studio at Prisma Estudio allowed me to respond organically to these emotive influences and my surroundings. I was inspired by Lisbon’s rich art scene, independent music culture, and Portuguese traditions, which all became part of an extended period of research within my practice.
The residency allowed me to direct my first solo exhibition evenings ; with live ‘Mizrab’ music , wine and Portuguese food and a collaborative Oil pastel mural. A summary of the influence Lisbon had on my work, bringing the local community and art crowd together.
