About Alice Wakefield
"My work is guided by traditional wheel throwing techniques and a practice of playing at the wheel. I aim to retain the immediacy and rhythm of these making processes in my work. I consciously add variation and looseness in each piece to create a family of forms."
 
"I currently make work in small batches and fire my pieces in wood kilns where salt and soda are added at high temperatures leaving my pots with a rich and weathered patina. I work with slips and raw glazing, sometimes using a small palette of glazes on the inside of my pieces."
 
"I enjoy the thoughtful and often slow process of packing the kiln and the long day of stoking the firebox. Each piece comes out with a unique character, depending on where it was placed in the kiln, which is what particularly draws me to this process.Function is a key aspect of my work - augmenting daily life with beautiful and unique objects."
 
Alice Wakefield (b.1996) is a London based potter. She was a primarily self-taught maker before graduating with a diploma from Clay College in Stoke on Trent in 2024. She makes small batches of salt and wood fired functional wares alongside production pottery, fabrication for other artists and teaching pottery skills from different studios.
