About Sanika Divekar
"My practice explores the relationship between memory, transformation, and the environmental imprint of human activity. Working primarily with clay, I investigate how everyday materials, natural and man-made, record presence and change over time. Inspired by plastiglomerates, hybrid geological formations where plastic fuses with stone, my vessels embody the tension between permanence and erosion, craft and waste."
"Each piece begins with the Matka, a traditional Indian water vessel, reimagined through contemporary processes. Using wild clay, waste fabric, and found materials such as cables and screws, I mark, tear, embed, and repair the surface, echoing geological and emotional shifts. I often use Egyptian paste, a self-glazing clay, to create fossil-like finishes that speak to transformation in flux."
"My vessels act as quiet witnesses to our time, layered with tactile memories and environmental commentary. They reflect resilience, fragility, and our evolving relationship with the natural world."
Sanika Divekar is a ceramic artist with a background in architecture and fine art, currently based in Bath, UK. She holds an MA in Fine Art Ceramics from Bath Spa University. Drawing from Indian cultural heritage, particularly the symbolism of the Matka, her work examines the relationship between environmental change, memory, and material permanence.
Using clay in dialogue with waste objects and organic remnants, Sanika creates contemporary vessels that blur the boundaries between sculpture and function. Her textured surfaces reveal traces of time, touch, and repair, encouraging deeper reflection on the marks we leave on both objects and the landscape.
Her work has been exhibited internationally, including 1000 Vases at Paris Design Week 2025 and Wells Art Contemporary 2025. She continues to develop her practice through research-led making, connecting craft, ecology, and cultural storytelling.
