About the Artist

'The starting point for the works may be a photo, a sketch or memory of time spent on the cliffs or in the sea. I strive to capture a collage of fleeting moments reduced to key elements – the contrast of the light or a horizon line which has been built over time. I am trying to fix a memory of a memory, a feeling of being in or travelling to the sea.

'Much of my work is created on board which allows for a very physical approach to painting. I very much enjoy applying paint by brush or scraping and pushing the paint into the surface with pallet knives, as well as removing layers by sanding scraping or stripping paint from the surface. I seek to create a surface that has been built polished and eroded over time. Each piece can take many months to create, each piece needs time to rest, dry before following glazes and layers are added or removed until a coherent surface is formed.'

Luke Knight studied painting in Cardiff at Howard Gardens, during which time he took part in a four-month Erasmus Exchange at L'ecole De Beaux-Art in Nantes, He went on to teach art and design in Bristol before, in 2008, moving back to Cornwall where he grew up.

Luke's work has been widely exhibited across the South-West as well as included in exhibitions in Nantes and Amsterdam. THROWN is proud to present his work for the first time in London.
