About Manuel Calvo

Manuel Calvo ( Palma de Mallorca, 1974 ) was trained in Fine Arts and printmaking in Madrid and completed a diploma in artistic ceramics in 2006 in Mallorca, with a graduation project inspired by Ken Eastman during ceramic studies at the Glasgow School of Art. He has exhibited his ceramics, sculptures, drawings and illustrations in galleries in Spain and collaborated with other artists as a musician and ceramicist. He presented in 2020 his first solo exhibition in London at the Zetter Hotel Clerkenwell and worked in commissions as a ceramicist and illustrator. He is currently developing his practice and teaching ceramics at The Kiln Rooms, London.

My practice focuses in ceramics & drawing. I ́m influenced by the occidental tradition of chiaroscuro, the synthesis of forms found in twentieth century art and the value given to crafts in oriental ink drawings, prints and ceramics. I ́m interested in imaginary narratives of the human condition, exploring fictional mutations and surreal associations around identity from a biological point of view and related to the concept of Deep Time. My methodology follows intuitive processes as a response to the material and I articulate these to create semi abstract expressive shapes in drawings and sculptures often mysterious and symbolic that sit in ambiguous and sometimes contradictory areas of interpretation.

The work presented is part of a recent collection called “Pangaea: Ceramics & Drawings”, showcased in early 2020 in a solo exhibition in London. The theme proposed a journey through time from the creation of our planet to the formation of the ancient Pangaea, whose ambiguous symbolism represents at the same time a unified world and a hostile territory for humanity.

A dozen sculptural ceramics explore the interior space of the vessel as a reference to caves and a representation of an enclosed methaphysical space, also evoking geological strata, ritual objects and the evolution of living forms. Additionally, a series of large ink & chlorine drawings represent the formation of our galaxy.
