About Emily Marston

"I create ceramic works that explore our relationship with nature and the wider universe, alongside the parallels with our internal experiences."

"Expanses of sky and water are reoccurring elements in my work, and I'm fascinated by how we're affected, and reassured by, natures rhythms and continuity."

"My process draws upon years of working and experimenting with agateware and nerikomi techniques and, over time, my way of working has evolved into a process that allows me to layer, cut and form the clay to explore fluidity and movement within the solid ceramic form."

"Layers of coloured clay are stacked, cut and reconfigured, intuitively and often multiple times, creating patterns that are fully integrated into the piece."

"Working with clay in this experimental way, my practice plays on the duality of being both present, grounded in a moment, and in continuous flow. A reminder that we are part of something bigger, something always changing and expanding."

Emily Marston studied Fine Art Painting at Winchester School of Art, followed by History of Art and Architecture at the University of Oxford. She spent over ten years curating and promoting the work of artists and designer makers, both independently and within a gallery setting. Emily then returned to her own practice in 2017 and has been working with clay over the last nine years.

Emily lives and works in Oxford and is an associate artist at Magdalen Road Studios.
