About Claire Allam

One of Claire's earliest ceramic memories is digging clay from a Cornish cliff withher father, aged6: this began a lifelong, if sporadic, relationship with the medium. Her rural childhood in a post-industrial tin mining a rea also kindled a strong love of natural forms and the landscape.

In 2014, Claire renewed her lifelong connection with the viscerality of ceramics. Working in porcelain and stoneware, her thrown and hand built forms have a strong, tactile qualityand act as a canvas for exploring the effect of fire on clay. A member of the Manor Wood Kiln collective, she also uses pit firing and raku techniques and strives for a contemporary response to these ancient firing methods. Her work celebrates the elemental combining of earth, air, fire and water and embraces the often-unexpected, sometimes other-worldly results.
