About the Pyrographic Vessel
Pyrography is a mark burning technique in which I use very subtly to expose the transition of tone in the grain of wood. Maintaining the natural elements of the wood is key and this is expressed through the imperfections of the wood, detail and textures. For this project it was very important I used a variety of woods from Maple burr, Ash and Spalted beech with the wood being locally sourced from Woodlands Farm in Shooters Hill, London.
About Darren Appiagyei
'My work is very much underpinned by a deep love and fascination with wood in its rawest form. With every vessel I make, it’s about embracing the intrinsic beauty of the wood; be it a crack, texture, knots or lack of symmetry. As a wood turner it’s about allowing the wood to speak for itself and enabling the inner beauty of the wood to shine.
'I am inspired by the little things we grow accustomed to, the intricate grain on your door house, the bark on a tree and the variation in textures on pavement. Inspiration is all around us it’s about being open to it. I believe nature has a way of vandalizing what has been manufactured, it’s like a flower that grows through concrete pavement, it shouldn’t be there, but it is with it’s overpowering beauty which shines so bright, a juxaposition almost.'

Kirsty Adam’s work is both functional and holds aesthetic meaning, retaining the spontaneity and delicacy intrinsic to making on the potters’ wheel. A Japanese comb tool is used to create and enhance the throwing lines. Her Icelandic collection is the culmination of a research trip to Iceland to express the ‘otherworldliness’ of the landscape.
Kirsty is an award-winning ceramicist currently working from her studio in Newcastle upon Tyne. She originally trained at Brighton Art College and then on the potters’ wheel in Japan. She has developed a personal approach to throwing on the wheel using porcelain clay, to produce unique pieces for the home.
