About Pontus Sandevärn

'Being aware the raw material of my craft contains a lifetime, I start from a place of reverence. My work is equal parts preservation and creation. I look for a glimpse of a story to feed my inclination to tell another, or simply carve out the already existing one.'

'Life sustains itself by consuming life and perpetuates by avoiding death. These are elemental denominators of all things living, prominent in wildlife; decorated away in the comfort of modern homes. Straight lines and perfect circles exude control. They set up boundaries and directions, create corners and contrasts. I believe this not only brings us a sense of shelter but also helps cement the idea of nature as something external to us. My work examines this dynamic, and while my carvings certainly add to the decor, they also bring a piece of the elements with them.'

Pontus Sandevärn is a Swedish woodworker whose creative journey began in music, where he spent his twenties performing and recording while taking odd jobs to sustain the dream. A deep fascination with language - both visual and written - led him to pursue design studies at Mälardalen University in Sweden. His career then shifted to freelance copywriting and graphic design, but the confines of the desk soon felt limiting.  Craving a more hands-on outlet, Pontus picked up a Mora knife, sparking memories of carving toys in the pine woods of Småland as a child. A long-dormant passion reignited. This quickly led to commissions, such as contributing to Steinbeisser’s Experimental Gastronomy Event 2024, exhibiting at Collect 2025, and carving for chef Daniel Berlin’s res- taurant, Vyn (No. 47 on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list).

Moving forward, Pontus aims to continue exploring hand tools while streamlining his process. He seeks to create a sustainable “time capsule” for himself that balances the expectations and pace of modern life, merging Swedish traditions of sloyd with the me- ticulousness and efficiency of Japanese woodworking. His work finds harmony between function and sculpture, often fluidly shifting between the two. The most recent additions to Pontus’s toolbox were an adze and a chainsaw, while the sketchbook is currently filling up with new shapes; shapes of bulk and scale, pe- ering naively yet lustingly into the world of furniture.
