About Lisa Sjukur

Born in Jakarta, Indonesia, I moved to London in 1995 to study Graphic Design at Central Saint Martins. After working as a graphic designer for over twenty years, I decided that my real passion was pottery.

My work largely comprises of functional wheel-thrown pots. I always start with the wheel - throwing a form and then stretching and altering it as the wheel is moving. I use the wheel as a way to express the movement and fluidity of the clay in an attempt to make the form as expressive as possible.

I wood-fire my pieces at an anagama kiln at Oxford Kilns for three days. The end results tend not to have the instant appeal of smooth, clean electric kiln projects, but wood-firing allows for richness in texture and colours. The flames allow a depth of movement in the finished work. The results are down to the interaction of fire, ash and clay - a king of controlled chaos.

This all informs the creation of my own wood-fired pots. I want them to look like they have undergone a process of change and want to see the ash and flame on the surface, the rough crusty surfaces contrasting with the smooth glassy surface where the ash has melted.
