Soda-fired stoneware with landscape material glaze

About Sam Dowling

"My practice is rooted in the Cornish landscape and my lived experience within it. Working closely with the land, I self-source, process, test, and alchemically transform Cornwall’s minerally-rich natural materials into reimagined identities. Through this transmutation, both within the clay and as a glaze, these materials – moorland granite, apple-wood-ash, Camel Estuary clay, coastal slate, and beach sand – evoke an emotional sense of place and infuse a local identity."

"I work with different techniques in both stoneware and porcelain clay to achieve a variety of surface qualities. Exploring press-moulded flasks provides a space on which to examine the tactile textures of my surroundings, whilst the immediacy and experience of throwing on the Leach kick-wheel echoes the rhythmic action of walking through the land."

"I throw my porcelain vessels to have a wide rim and narrow foot. Through this disparity, the form distorts during the soda-firing process, and the circumference of the resulting rim rolls like the shifting hills on the horizon. The glazes within these vessels are made with landscape materials, and as a result, the colours integrally reflect the geology of the North Coast."

Having begun working with clay five years ago, Sam Dowling graduated this summer with a 1st Class Honours in Ceramics from Cardiff School of Art & Design. He spent his time at university rigorously examining the behaviour of self-sourced materials in ceramic practice. During this experimental period, he was able to build a strong understanding of his personally developed material vocabulary, which he now utilises like a library.

Now he has returned home to Cornwall, where he intends to establish his first studio and continue to examine, experiment, and build on his existing knowledge of local materials in atmospheric kiln-firing techniques.
