About Tamsin Arrowsmith-Brown
Tamsin Arrowsmith-Brown is a potter living and working in London.
She spent 10 years working in architectural and graphic design studios whilst developing her passion for making ceramics in her spare time. In 2014 Tamsin decided to make ceramics her career and began a 1.5 year apprenticeship with studio potter Helen Beard.
While still an apprentice, Tamsin was selected to exhibit at the first Ceramic Art York and the London based Ceramics in the City exhibition, both in 2015. Since finishing her apprenticeship she has exhibited at galleries and shows across the UK including the Yorkshire Sculpture Gallery, Cambridge Contemporary Art, the Contemporary Craft Festival at Bovey Tracey and Made London.
Tamsin works in wheel-thrown, hand-painted porcelain. The decoration is an exploration of mark-making in embroidery, knitting, textiles and print-making. These influences drive her to work in the simplified lines and marks of thread or block-print. She is drawn to a monochrome colour palette, in particular the blue and white of ‘traditional’ ceramics. Tamsin finds the clean, calm shapes of Japanese ceramics particularly compelling and while she does not consciously emulate them, reflections of these lines appear in her work, providing a contrast to the sometimes intricate patterns applied to the surface.
