About Rebecca Appleby
"My work explores the dialogue between construction and erosion—between what we build and what nature reclaims. Clay is my primary language; it records gesture, pressure, and time. I use it to express the balance between strength and fragility, body and architecture, permanence and impermanence."
"Through series such as Strata, BLOCK, Stela, and Gaia, my work delves into the layered language of the earth itself. I draw inspiration from geological strata—those accumulated bands of time—to explore how materials record memory. By building, compacting, eroding, and sometimes fracturing surfaces, I expose the tension between structure and rupture, order and upheaval."
"Each ceramic piece becomes a cross-section of imagined terrain: a surface where sediment, pressure, and time converge. These sculptural forms echo the earth’s crust and its continual cycles of endurance, erosion, and renewal. In revealing these layers, I aim to show how objects—like landscapes, bodies, and cities—carry histories of transformation embedded within them."
Rebecca Appleby is a British ceramic artist and sculptor whose work bridges traditional craftsmanship with contemporary abstraction. Based in Yorkshire, UK, she explores the physical and emotional tension between structure and fragility, drawing inspiration from architecture, geology, and the human body.
Trained at Edinburgh College of Art (BA Ceramics, 2001), Appleby’s practice moves between ceramics, mixed media, and sculptural installation. Her forms combine precision and decay—reflecting how natural and industrial environments evolve, fracture, and regenerate over time.
Appleby is a selected member of the Craft Potters Association and the Royal Society of Sculptors. Her work has been exhibited across the UK and internationally, with pieces held in major collections including the Centre of Ceramic Art (CoCA) Marchmont House, Lotherton and the Crafts Council Collection. Public commissions include Latent Power (Leeds, 2019).
