About Mauro Fainas
"For his ceramic practice, Mauro often draws from the very distinctive memory of picking seashells as a child. Growing up in Madrid, but spending his summers on the coast of Galicia, the shells and objects that the waves would wash ashore were charged with meanings that escaped him. Not only did they arrive from a realm inaccessible to him, often they would come with crusted structures, seaweeds attached, amalgamated, battered by time and tides."
 
"The natural world, in its broadness, is still an inspiration, but Mauro stays away from the literal. Growing patterns, movement traces, how a slug climbs a step or how a wave folds... Nature is a departure point to go looking for that feeling of awe particular of a child, when the world was bigger, full of mystery and uncertainty. In his work, Mauro tries to capture that sense of wonder, subverting categories, complicating classification, and widening the realm of possibility."
 
Born in Madrid in 1982 and educated in art in Helsinki, Mauro is currently based in Berlin. He started his ceramic journey at the community studio Ceramic Kingdom in 2021, where he went to work and teach for two years. He then enjoyed art residencies both in Italy and Japan which gave him a wider experience of materials and techniques. Back in Berlin, he embraced the emerging clay scene of the city, taking part in shows at venues such as Backhaus Projects, Voo Space, Bikini Berlin or Treptow Arena. Since 2024 he has set up his ceramic studio within the community of Kunsthalle Neukölln, as well as took up teaching again, this time at Peace Out Paradise studio.
