About Claudia Von Boch
"Inspired by phenomena of erosion, sedimentation, pressure, and heat found in the geological strata, recuperated scraps of different clays, coloured engobes and glazes are accumulated in layers. These stratified clays once fired reveal fusions, deformations, colors, flows, textures and fissures that highlight the association between humans and the earthly world. This story of evolution is a process of sedimentary aggregation that contains the memory of the past, manifesting itself in the present but is also the seed of the future."
"Earth, humanity and humans are an accumulation of stories with a common destiny in a fragile link, and an uncertain balance called life. My work uses these recycled clay materials combined with stoneware and fired at 1200°C and left unglazed."
Born in Canada in 1957, Claudia Von Boch discovered ceramics in Argentina, a country rich in clay, where I lived for 23 years.
"Perhaps influenced by my family, who have been involved in industrial ceramics manufacturing (Villeroy&Boch) for more than eight generations, clay has become my most faithful companion. My first approach to ceramic work was self-taught, taking ceramics classes, technology courses and learning to throw with Argentine ceramists Guillermo Mané and Jorge Basile."
"But it was in Switzerland that ceramics took a truly professional turn for me. I began with a year at Céruleum, a school of visual arts in Lausanne (1994-95), followed by four years of ceramics at the École d'Arts Visuels in Vevey (1995-99) under the guidance of ceramist Jacques Kauffman. With a degree in ceramics, I opened L'Atelier Gaïa in 1999. For 25 years, I divided my time between my personal work, exhibited in Switzerland and abroad, and teaching ceramics."
"In 2019, I stopped teaching and moved my studio to Piedmont in Italy, where I now work exclusively on my sculptures and small series of objects. I am a member of the International Academy of Ceramics, the Académie Francaise Arts, Sciences, Lettres (Médaille Vermeil), Swiss Ceramics Association, Homo Faber Michelangelo Foundation."
