About Stella Brauer

"When exploring the physical elements of clay and glaze, my pieces are constantly rethought and transformed. Paradoxically, the processing of clay, seemingly in opposition to the concept of nature, allows me to study living forms and sensations of movement. In my work, which is situated between concrete object and abstract sculpture, I intend to evoke the vibrancy I observe in nature's organic forms. Some elements of my pieces refer to the idea of evolution and point to the flexibility and fragility of nature, which is constantly impacted and transformed by humans."


Stella Brauer was born in 1997 in Vienna, Austria. She studied Arts & Culture in Maastricht and attended a one-year course in ceramics at the local school of Arts and Crafts where she learned how to throw on a wheel. She deepened her knowledge in pottery through several workshops. In Paris, she completed an apprenticeship in ceramics with two artists, Javier Bacigalupo and Héloïse Piraud in early 2023, became a resident at the studio “Clay” and participated in her first group exhibition “Adjust” in Vienna.


Currently she works on personal projects in a ceramic studio in Berlin.



Artist Q&A

When did you first work with your chosen medium?

S: My first encounter with the medium dates back to 2019, when I was a student in Maastricht. I took a course in ceramics at the local art academy taught by a potter who has been working for over 40 years. I learned how to be patient and dedicated myself to learn the manual skills required for this craft. I became fascinated by the vast possibilities this medium offers. By exploring properties and processing of clay, such as glazing and firing, there is always an element of surprise which makes it even more intriguing for me to continue my research. Ever since I started, the field of ceramics became a rich source of artistic creation to me.


Can you tell us more about the work featured in our Winter Exhibition

S: Both pieces featured in this year's Winter Exhibition date from 2023 and have resulted from my experimental research in ceramics while I was in Paris. I was interested in the formal and

abstract approach to the material that would transform my utilitarian pieces into unique sculptures with forms that evoke organic movement.


How do you decide when a form works? What are you looking for in a final piece?

S: I work with the physical and aesthetic properties of clay and glaze through controlled improvisation. Elements of research and creation occur simultaneously when I work. In this way, my pieces are constantly rethought and transformed until I am satisfied with the final piece. Sometimes I start with an idea, I think about dimensions and materials beforehand and then while creating everything can change as I find another way of expression which is more spontaneous. The traces that refer to the process of my research become part of the final object.


Is functionality important to your work?

S: Functionality is present in my work but it became less important to me over the years. My perspective on it also changed when I started modelling vessels instead of throwing them on the wheel. I remember seeing the work of the artist Ron Nagel, who focused on the typology of the vessel and created a series of cups totally detached from their utilitarian concern. I really like the idea of blurring the lines between functional and abstract. For me abstraction represents a greater challenge which also comes with an increased flexibility and freedom. Many of my pieces are situated between functional design and abstract sculpture.
