About Craig Hartenberger
"My work contains abstracted bits of geometry puzzled together into repeating patterns that are layered or stacked to create sculptural forms. This geometry feels familiar, it has many associations rooted in our own experiences, but not anchored in one single reference."
"The material, pigmented clay, has been sanded and left unglazed to mimic stone. This references stone artifacts and elements of architecture as well nodding towards the weathering that took place over eons to create clay that I use today. I connect my work to time both through the geologic processes which created the material as well as time spent patiently labouring in the studio."
"Doing one thing, at the pace it takes, for as long as it takes is a gift that I can give and receive through the process of making. This deliberate manner of working is evident; elements are sparse though deeply considered, confident in their calmness."
Craig Hartenberger (b. 1990, USA) is a visual artist working primarily in the medium of ceramics. Through a meditative relationship with material, his sculptural works explore the language of pattern and geometric abstraction, drawing connections to his interest in observing the built world through architecture and objects. His practice embraces slow and deliberate work, giving attention to each moment. His works have been exhibited and collected across the US and internationally in a variety of venues. He received his BFA in ceramics from Missouri State University in 2013 and his MFA in studio art from Kent State University in 2020. He splits his studio practice between Springdale, AR and Coatepec, Mexico.
