Sue Gunn is a maker whose ceramics cross between function and sculpture. She graduated Morley College London with a distinction HND Ceramics in 2020 and now works in her garden studio in SW London.
The shifting landscape of the Earth, whether as a result of natural phenomena or human intervention, is the inspiration for Sue's work. Intrigued by the visual similarity between the body’s internal structure and the flow systems found in the natural world, her aim is to capture the vulnerability of both.
She hand builds her sculptures, assembling rolled hollow tubes into intricate forms. She likes to push the materials, allowing the high temperatures of the kiln to affect the final outcome, embracing the elements of the process that are beyond her control.
The fractured and shattered glazes evoke memories of parched and crumbled earth, a reminder of how the Earth’s landscape alters when exposed to intense heat.
